British Open collapse site still haunting Jean Van De Velde

In the 1999 British Open at Carnoustie, Frenchman Jean Van De Velde suffered one of the most infamous and painful collapses in the centuries-long history of golf, maybe even in all of sports. At the 2016 Senior British Open, Van De Velde revisited Carnoustie, and things didn’t get much better. After just turning 50 years old earlier this year, Van De Velde was able to play in his first Senior Open that just so happened to be at the same site of his most notorious moment as a professional golfer. On that Sunday in July 1999, Van De Velde stood on the 18th tee at Carnoustie leading by three strokes. One calamity after another later and he somehow managed to salvage triple bogey to enter into a playoff with Paul Lawrie, which he lost. It was Van De Velde’s one shot at glory, and he did what most of us average humans would have done — he chunked it into the burn. On this Thursday in July 2016, Van De Velde went back to Carnoustie and carded an opening-round 83, a round of 11 over par. After the first

PGA threatens to boycott North Carolina over HB2

The state of North Carolina continues to face backlash from its controversial HB2 bill. Following the NBA’s decision to move the 2017 All-Star Game from Charlotte, the PGA Tour released a statement, questioning its own future in the state. It did, however, stop short of threatening to move 2017’s PGA Championship. Strong statement from the PGA of America about House Bill 2 and the 2017 PGA Championship: pic.twitter.com/L3RqUEym9M — Phil Orban (@philorbanWSOC9) July 22, 2016 Even without threatening to move one of next year’s majors, that’s certainly a strong stance to take, especially the conclusion to this statement. “As we look forward to future events, our willingness to consider coming back to the State of North Carolina will be severely impacted unless HB2 is overturned.” Even if we ignore the Women’s PGA Tour and the Champions Tour, the PGA has an annual stop at Quail Hollow. More often than not, that event is one of the more star-studded non-majors or WGC events o...

Gambler wins big on Henrik Stenson, Aaron Baddeley parlay

Henrik Stenson was arguably the best golfer in the world to never win a major prior to his dominating performance at The Open Championship over the weekend. Betting on him to break through and end the drought would not have been all that insane. But betting on Stenson to win the Open and Aaron Baddeley to win the Barbasol Championship would be just plain lunacy, right? Tell that to the person who won more than $86,000 doing exactly that. For whatever reason, a gambler in Australia decided to place $50 on Stenson winning the Open and Baddeley winning the Barbasol Championship this past weekend. He parlayed it, meaning both had to win for the bet to pay out. Here’s the slip: Did u pick @henrikstenson to with The Open? @AaronBadds to win Barbasol? This guy did & parlayed them! @GolfChannel pic.twitter.com/NytBlQdpRA — Luke Elvy (@Luke_Elvy) July 19, 2016 How? Why? Elvy told Golf Digest that the slip belongs to a “renowned” gambler in Australia. We don’t doubt that he is renowned, but he’s

Tiger Woods withdraws from PGA Championship, won’t return this season

The 2016 golf season will conclude without Tiger Woods appearing in a single major. Woods officially withdrew from the 2016 PGA Championship on Tuesday and announced he won’t participate in any competition for the remainder of the 2016 season. Woods’ agent, Mark Steinberg, said in an email to GolfChannel.com that the 40-year-old golfer is “continuing to make progress, but simply not ready for PGA.” Steinberg added that Woods “will continue to rehab and work hard to then assess when he starts play for the ’16/’17 season.” The 14-time major winner hasn’t played in a PGA tournament since last August, when he finished tied for 10th at the Wyndham Championship. Woods has undergone two back surgeries since then and hasn’t exactly looked like he’s ready to return to competition. Woods’ string of absences is unprecedented, as he’ll now sit out four consecutive majors, the longest streak of his career. His last major appearance didn’t go well, as he shot 4-over-par through two rounds a

10 takeaways from the 2016 Open Championship

The 2016 British Open is in the books. Thanks to a marvelous performance from Henrik Stenson, the big Swede has his first major. For 2016, Stenson is the Champion Golfer of the Year. For the rest of time, his name will be on the Claret Jug. With the week at Royal Troon complete, what are the takeaways from the 2016 Open Championship? 1. Henrik Stenson’s overwhelming performance For the fourth time in a row, a first-time major winner emerged victorious. Following in the footsteps of Jason Day, Danny Willett and Dustin Johnson, Henrik Stenson got the major championship monkey off of his back at the 2016 British Open. A major championship was one of the few achievements that had previously eluded Stenson. His performance was simply brilliant. After an opening round 63, Phil Mickelson looked like he might run away with the Claret Jug. Obviously, that did not happen. In the second round, Stenson counter-punched Lefty, firing a 65. The Swede then outplayed the 2013 Open champ over t...

WATCH: Rory McIlroy take frustration out on club at British Open

The 2016 British Open hasn’t been a great tournament for Rory McIlroy and he let his frustration show during the third round on Saturday by breaking his 3-wood. Rory went with the HULK SMASH after his second shot on the Par 5 16th hole after it went off course way right. Wow, Rory. pic.twitter.com/nLPPEIa0jO — Beth Ann Nichols (@GolfweekNichols) July 16, 2016 Here’s the funny part – McIlroy went on to par the hole, but was +2 overall for the day and 11 shots behind co-leaders Phil Mickelson and Henrik Stenson at the time. McIlroy has been in the headlines earlier this year for being in the weight room so much, even coming under criticism from some pundits for getting too ripped for the good of his game. At least in this case, McIlroy’s 3-wood is probably thinking the same thing.

Phil Mickelson ties major record with an opening round 63 at British Open

After winning The Open at Muirfeld three years ago, Phil Mickelson is back to making headlines at the oldest major in golf. That’s because he came within a lip-out on the final hole from setting the major record for lowest round ever. As it was, Mickelson tied the previous record by shooting an 8-under-par 63 at Royal Troon in The Open. No player has ever shot a 62 in any major ever, and if it weren’t for a putt that managed to just cut the right lip and spin out on the 18th hole, that record would’ve fallen. It didn’t hurt that Royal Troon saw perhaps the most un-Open like conditions in decades — with the sun shining, warm weather and little to no wind to speak of. The course played easy for just about everyone on the day and Mickelson just so-happened to take the most advantage of it possible. Mickelson also watched a replay of his missed putt on the 18th hole and apparently felt like crying, understanding the rare opportunity that was barely missed. “It was one of the best rounds that

John Daly as stylish as ever at Open with pineapple pants

John Daly is without question one of the most colorful personalities in the history of professional golf. And the fact that he has adopted a style of golf attire befitting such a uniquely original persona only adds to his outrageous persona. Daly’s fashion-forward (backward?) approach to clothing was on full display Thursday during the first round of the 145th Open Championship at Royal Troon, as the 50-year-old is rocking … pants with pineapples on them? John Daly sported some snazzy pina colada-themed @LoudmouthGolf pants Thursday at #TheOpen : https://t.co/LJgxBdjrZT pic.twitter.com/eE9JqjCKcY — Golfweek Magazine (@GolfweekMag) July 14, 2016 Interesting choice, although not at all surprising in the least. As noted in the above tweet, the pants are likely an offering from Daly's Loudmouth Golf line. Perhaps Daly was inspired to don the pineapple pants after being awaken by the soothing sounds of Rupert Holmes’ classic, “Escape (The Piña Colada Song)” from his alarm clock Thursday morn

WATCH: Louis Oosthuizen sinks hole-in-one at British Open

For the second time this year, Louis Oosthiuzen has made a hole-in-one at a golf major. On Thursday, Oosthuizen became the first player competing at The Open to sink his first shot on a hole, doing so on the 14th hole. Watch: Hole in one! Louis Oosthuizen aces the 14th. #TheOpen pic.twitter.com/jewBgSSf15 — The Open (@TheOpen) July 14, 2016 Oosthuizen’s hole-in-one was the first on the 14th hole since 1997. So it has been a while. It has not been as long between hole-in-one shots for Oosthuzien, of course. The pro dropped one in the hole earlier this year at The Masters. With his latest hole-in-one, Oosthuzien enters some rather unique territory on the tour. .@Louis57TM also made ace at Masters. He's the only player in the last 30 years to make an ace at 2 different majors in a season. — Justin Ray (@JustinRayGC) July 14, 2016 There’s still time left to hit a third ace. What do you say, Louis?

Sleepers and favorites for the Open Championship

One the best parts of the 2016 PGA Tour is that it has been consistently difficult to handicap who is going to win the purse at each tournament, and the Open Championship at Royal Troon this weekend is no exception. That might be rough for fans just waiting to see who raises the Claret Jug at the end of Day 4, but loads of fun for anyone in a golf pool or a fantasy sports ring. Here are six picks for the Open Championship, which starts on Thursday, July 14. The Sleepers Rafa Cabrera-Bello: His name isn’t one that grab headlines like fellow Spaniard Sergio Garcia, but 32-year-old is a staple on the European Tour and quite popular among the experts in the daily fantasy sports world. He finished tied for 21st at the Scottish Open last week and previously finished fourth in the Open de France, boasting 12 top-25 finishes on the this season, six of those being place in the top ten. In addition, he has made three of four Open Championship cuts over the last four years. Charl Schwartzel: The 2011 Masters ch
