Hurley takes 2-shot lead over Els in Quicken Loans National

BETHESDA, Md. (AP) Naval Academy graduate Billy Hurley III shot a 4-under 67 on Saturday to take a two-stroke lead over Ernie Els into the final round of the Quicken Loans National. Hurley had four birdies in the bogey-free round at Congressional to reach 15 under. Els holed out for eagle on the par4 12th with the shot of the week and finished with a 65. Jon Rahm, who held the lead after one round and shared it with Hurley after two, struggled. Playing his first event as a professional, the 21-year-old former Arizona State star from Spain had four bogeys in a 70 that left him three strokes behind Hurley. Hurley, who grew up in Leesburg, Virginia, has been able to take advantage of favorable conditions at Congressional this week for Tiger Woods' annual tournament.

Tiger Woods working on getting into golf shape

Tiger Woods hasn’t played a big tournament in nearly a year. Recently, the 14-time major winner sat out the US Open due not having his body ready to play. Still today, Woods has stated he can’t commit to any future tournaments at the moment. “I’m still progressing, I’m still getting stronger; I’m excited about what has transpired so far,” Woods told reporters Wednesday at the Quicken Loans National tournament that he hosts and that benefits his foundation. “I’ve gotten stronger and it’s just recovering from day to day. Has anything bad happened … that’s one of the things. I’m sore and it’s about trying to recover the next day. I just need to still get in, I guess, more golf shape, try to hit more golf balls, things of that nature. So I’m still working on it, I’m still progressing so far, and I just wish I could be here and play and be out here and get it done. Just miss playing.” Since his 2008 ACL surgery, Woods has missed eight major championships. That number could r

Tiger doubles down on criticism of Dustin Johnson fiasco

Tiger Woods on Wednesday continued to weigh in on how Dustin Johnson’s bid for his first major was nearly derailed by the “frustrating” way in which the USGA mishandled the possibility of assessing the golfer a penalty stroke during his final round of the U.S. Open. Woods first joined the chorus of fellow irate pro golfers, including Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth and Rickie Fowler, on Sunday, taking to Twitter to bemoan how the USGA informed Johnson he may or may not be assessed a penalty stroke on the 12th hole, seven holes after Johnson alerted an official that his ball moved as he was lining up to putt. Some great golf by @DJohnsonPGA all week, strong way to finish overcoming that rules farce. Happy Father's Day to DJ and all of you. — Tiger Woods (@TigerWoods) June 20, 2016 On Wednesday at his own Quicken Loans Tournament — where of course he will not be playing — Woods spoke at length about the entire fiasco and continued to rip the USGA for what he sees as a complete bungling of the e

Rory McIlroy drops out of Rio Olympics over Zika concerns

Many athletes have spoken up about Zika concerns in the Rio Olympics, and many have pulled their name from competitive consideration. Golfer Rory McIlroy is the latest to take his name out of the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. McIlroy said that he did not want to make the risk of catching the virus, and added the following, via the AP: “After speaking with those closest to me, I’ve come to realize that my health and my family’s health comes before anything else.” […] “I trust the Irish people will understand my decision. The unwavering support I receive every time I compete in a golf tournament at home or abroad means the world to me. I will continue to endeavor to make my fans and fans of golf proud with my play on the course and my actions off it.” McIlroy also mentioned that he and his fiancée are considering starting a family in the next couple of years. He acknowledged that the risk of infection is low, but the greatest concerns of the virus appear to be when conceiving children and i

Rory McIlroy will skip Olympics due to Zika concerns

Rory McIlroy announced on Wednesday that he is withdrawing his name from consideration for the Rio Olympics. McIlroy, the No. 5 golfer in the world, has changed his mind after saying earlier this month that it would not be “the end of the world” if he contracted the Zika virus while competing in Brazil. “After much thought and deliberation, I have decided to withdraw my name from consideration for this summer’s Olympic Games,” McIlroy said in a statement, via NBC Sports. “After speaking with those closest to me, I’ve come to realize that my health and my family’s health comes before anything else. Even though the risk of infection from the Zika virus is considered low, it is a risk nonetheless and a risk I am unwilling to take.” McIlroy initially said he was considering skipping the Olympics due to Zika concerns but later said he was no longer concerned after gathering more information. He is engaged to a former PGA Tour employee and has said he plans to start a family in the near future.

USGA on Dustin Johnson ruling: We 'regret the distraction'

The USGA had an embarrassing Sunday at the U.S. Open. Apparently the organization is well aware of that, based on a new statement in which it admitted mistakes regarding the uncertainty of Dustin Johnson’s penalty stroke on the fifth green. USGA issues statement on Dustin Johnson ruling. The organization "regrets the distraction" it caused. pic.twitter.com/NAaBb3rxie — Jason Sobel (@JasonSobelESPN) June 20, 2016 Well, it’s better late than never, we suppose. Still, a few issues jump out. One, Johnson brought the movement of the ball to everyone’s attention. That set the chain of events off. If D.J. had never brought it to anyone’s attention, it’s unlikely that anyone at the USGA would have watched a super blown up video of it. Without that, nobody even sees the ball move. If he was trying to get away with something, he never would have brought it up. Two, Lee Westwood was playing with Johnson. In doing so, he’s protecting the rest of the field. If Westwood and his caddie both...

Bubba Watson not afraid of Zika, looking forward to Olympics

Many golfers, and athletes in general, have backed out of the Olympics due to Zika concerns, but this has not fazed Bubba Watson. Watson is excited at the chance to represent the United States in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, and he plans to participate if he qualifies, as he told the Chicago Tribune: “For me, if I get in, it’s a no-brainer.” That’s a pretty simple answer for the 37-year old Bagdad, Fla., native and University of Georgia alum, who finished his final round at the U.S. Open on Sunday shooting 75 and finishing 12 over. Watson also addressed the threat of the Zika virus, mentioning it doesn’t necessarily affect him: “You have to remember, situations are different,” Watson said. “Both of my kids are adopted; we can’t have kids. Obviously you don’t want to get a virus, but in that way, we’re not worried at all. I’ve taken shots, done all I need to do to prepare.” The Tribune also reported that Watson would like to see a team event in the Olympics for golf
