Longtime A's announcer Bill King wins Hall's Frick Award

OXON HILL, Md. (AP) Former Oakland Athletics announcer Bill King has won the Ford C. Frick Award presented by the Hall of Fame for excellence in broadcasting. The award was announced Wednesday at the winter meetings. King died in 2005 after 25 years of calling A's games. King liked to punctuate big plays with his signature exclamation of ''Holy Toledo!'' He also was known for his handlebar mustache and beard, making his face as well as his voice familiar with fans. For nearly a half-century, King called games in the Bay Area. He started out as a fill-in on Giants broadcasts and later did play-by-play for the Raiders and Warriors. He joined the Athletics' crew in 1981. King was among eight finalists on the ballot for the Frick honor. Gary Cohen, Jacques Doucet, Ken Harrelson, Pat Hughes, Mike Krukow, Ned Martin and Dewayne Staats also were considered by a 17-member panel. King will be recognized on July 29 during the Hall of Fame induction weekend in Cooperstown, New York.

More time needed before Tiger Woods is judged by his scores

NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) A flop shot that required feel. A wedge to a back pin that he had to trust. Tiger Woods followed those two birdies with a perfect 6-iron that he wanted to be even better, urging it to move ''one yard ... one yard!'' The golf ball didn't listen. Television viewers did. And his three straight birdies after going 466 days without competition sure got everyone's attention, even those who were playing. ''When I saw that he was 4 under through eight, I wanted to withdraw so I could go watch him,'' Russell Knox said. Was he back to being Tiger Woods? Of course not. This was only the front nine of the first round at the Hero World Challenge. By the end of the week, Woods was 15th out of 17 players . What returned was the excitement of having him inside the ropes again. ''Everybody loves the comeback story,'' Matt Kuchar said. ''A guy like Tiger, good or bad, draws attention. If it's good, it gets really exciting.'' So he's back. And now he's gone again. Still to be determined is when he will pl

Tiger Woods predictably sent Hero World Challenge ratings soaring

Here’s a breaking news bulletin for you: Tiger Woods is good for golf ratings. That might be an odd thing to say about someone who before the weekend was the 898th ranked golfer in the world. It might also be an odd thing to say about someone who hadn’t played in an official event since August 2015 and missed the cut in the last three majors that he played. But this is still golf and this is still Tiger Woods. Nobody has ever had a bigger impact on the popularity of their sport than Tiger Woods, especially when it comes to television ratings. Tiger finally made his long-awaited return to competitive golf at his own tournament, the Hero World Challenge. And while the special postseason event in the Bahamas may not have the place to make the splashiest return, it certainly got more people than usual to tune in. Geoff Shackelford has the full breakdown of the ratings increase from the tournament and it’s staggering. Thursday: .86 rating, up 190% versus last year, most watched first round since the Br

Thomas Bjorn appointed Europe's Ryder Cup captain for 2018

LONDON (AP) Thomas Bjorn is the first Scandinavian to be appointed captain of Europe's Ryder Cup team. The 45-year-old Dane will lead the team against the United States in 2018 at Le Golf National in Paris after being chosen by a five-man panel, including Europe's past three captains. Bjorn says ''I have lived and breathed the European Tour for so long, and now I will do the same with the Ryder Cup for the next two years. I'm very much looking forward to taking on this task.'' A 15-time European Tour winner, Bjorn has played in three Ryder Cups and been a vice captain in four matches. That includes this year's 17-11 loss to the United States at Hazeltine.

Hideki Matsuyama ends his year on a big roll

NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) It started with a victory at home in the Japan Open. It ended with another trophy in the Bahamas against a short but strong field. Five tournaments. Four victories. The way Hideki Matsuyama is playing, he might wish the Masters started next week. Or maybe not. ''I'm kind of glad it's not,'' he said with a broad smile, ''because I don't think I could win next week.'' Winning must be exhausting for the 24-year-old Japanese star, and no one has been more proficient at it over the last two months. Even more alarming is that Matsuyama is making it look easy, although getting through the final nine holes at the Hero World Challenge felt as heavy as walking through the beach sand of the Bahamas. Coming off seven-shot victories in the HSBC Champions and the Taiheiyo Masters, he had a seven-shot lead over Henrik Stenson going into the final round at Albany Golf Club. Matsuyama didn't make another birdie after the ninth hole, and his lead was reduced to two shots with two holes to play when he cl

NASSAU, Bahamas -- Tiger Woods started with brief run at the lead. Hideki Matsuyama ended Saturday on his way to another victory.Matsuyama, a winner in three of his last four tournaments, holed out for eagle on the front nine and kept his mistakes to a minimum for a 7-under 65 to build a seven-shot lead in the Hero World Challenge.British Open champion Henrik Stenson (66) and U.S. Open winner Dustin Johnson (72) were the closest players to the Japanese star.Woods was even farther back -- 11 shots -- though the opening hour was filled with big excitement and raised expectations. Woods opened with three straight birdies, and then holed out a 40-yard bunker shot on the par-3 fifth hole to get within two shots as Matsuyama was getting started. But it didn't last. After an 18-foot birdie putt on the 11th hole to reach 11 under, Woods started missing fairways and dropping shots. And he ended the third round with another tee shot into the water on the 18th hole for a double bogey. He had to settle for a 70 and was in
