WWE Battleground preview: What former Shield member will leave as WWE Champion?

The WWE World Heavyweight Championship will be on the line this Sunday at Battleground as former Shield “brothers” have a triple-threat match for the first time ever. Dean Ambrose, newly drafted to SmackDown, defends the title against Raw roster draftees Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns in what should be an outstanding match. Even though I’m excited to see this Shield triple-threat match for the first time, there’s a part of me that wonders why WWE would do it for the first time ever at a low-level pay-per-view like Battleground. A match like this should have been at WrestleMania. It really is a dream match that could have headlined the biggest show of the year. The reason that WWE felt like it had to do the match now is because it split up the rosters on Tuesday’s SmackDown Live with Rollins and Reigns on Raw while Ambrose is on SmackDown. Due to the draft, this is the last time these three can do the match unless WWE finds a way to get them on the same show again. Here’s a look at the three comp

WWE draft: Profiling the six NXT draft picks

The WWE Draft went down on the first episode of SmackDown Live. The resulting picks of seven NXT talents with the six NXT picks allotted to the GMs bring up some hard-working talent through well-deserved promotions. These six picks were spread between Raw and SmackDown in a two-to-four split with a superstar and a woman moving to Monday nights and a pair of women, a tag team and a superstar heading to Tuesday nights. The three women selected were brought up to fill out a women’s division that needed bolstering with the brand split. But they were also all deserving of the call-ups. They should play pivotal roles in their new brands and should allow for more interesting story lines. Of the four men called up, they consisted of a tag team, a guy who profiles well as a solid mid-carder and a true superstar in the making. The WWE draft was a great event for these talents and should only be the start of their budding careers. 6. Carmella, now on SmackDown Originally the valet for t...

WWE drops Jerry Lawler from commentary, moves him to pre-event shows

There’s a broadcasting shakeup over at WWE, and it will see Jerry Lawler no longer commentating on matches. Following Tuesday’s WWE Draft, the company announced it will be changing up its broadcast teams, and as part of that, Lawler is moving aside. WWE then later sent out an update that Lawler and Booker T will be involved in pre-match shows: The new announce teams for WWE’s New Era will feature Michael Cole, Corey Graves and Byron Saxton Monday nights on Raw, while Mauro Ranallo, JBL and David Otunga handle the commentary for SmackDown Live every Tuesday night.  Also receiving a makeover will be the announce teams for WWE Superstars and WWE Main Event. Both shows will be led by Tom Phillips, and he will be joined each and every week by Graves on WWE Superstars and Otunga on WWE Main Event. UPDATE: In addition to the commentary booth updates on Raw, SmackDown Live and more, WWE Hall of Famers Booker T and Jerry “The King” Lawler will bring their decades of experience in sports-entertainment

WWE star goes undrafted, is left off Raw and SmackDown rosters

Tuesday night's WWE Draft saw the current WWE Champion go to SmackDown and NXT phenom Finn Balor selected by Raw, but one name never came off the draft board. Heath Slater, a member of the Social Outcasts who suffered a nasty injury in a match just a few days ago, went undrafted by either show and was left sitting alone in the green room waiting for his name to be called. Slater's fellow team members Bo Dallas and Curtis Axel were both drafted to Raw.    See full WWE Draft results here. Slater, who has been signed with WWE for a decade, seemingly becomes a free agent able to join either show - and this could be a positive career move for him. The Social Outcasts, as a group, were struggling to get over, but all three members may have a better chance to climb the ladder as singles competitors. Where should Slater go? There's no rush, really. Slater could make sporadic appearances on both shows for the next month or two before settling down.

Dozens of retired wrestlers sue WWE over brain injuries

A group of retired wrestlers has filed a class action lawsuit against the WWE and Vince McMahon, claiming the company hid the long-term effects and risks of head injuries that they say they suffered during matches. The complaint was filed on behalf of Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka and dozens of former wrestlers, including Joseph "Road Warrior Animal" Laurinaitis, Paul "Mr. Wonderful" Orndorff and James "Kamala" Harris, who have performed with WWE or its predecessors since the 1970s. Similar to recent lawsuits against the NHL and NFL, the WWE is being accused of failing to care for wrestlers' repetitive head injuries "in any medically competent or meaningful manner" and concealing the risks of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and other traumatic brain injuries they suffered as a result of their careers, as first reported by Bloomberg. WWE "placed corporate gain over its wrestlers' health, safety, and financial security, choosing to leave the plaintiffs severely injured and with no recourse to treat their dam

Ex-wrestlers file concussion lawsuit against WWE

Following in the footsteps of NHL and NFL athletes before them, a group of former WWE wrestlers have filed suit against the organization alleging it concealed the effects of neurological injuries suffered through participation in WWE events. The suit was filed by dozens of former wrestlers, and some of the notable figures amongst the plaintiffs include: Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka, Joseph “The Road Warrior Animal” Laurinaitis, and Chris “King Kong Bundy” Pallies. The suit itself alleges multiple grievances with the WWE, stating the company placed financial gain ahead of any safety concerns for its wrestlers. The WWE is accused in the lawsuit of failing to care for wrestlers’ repetitive head injuries “in any medically competent or meaningful manner” and misrepresenting and concealing the nature of long-term neurological injuries they suffered as a result of their careers. The lawsuit also lays out an interesting wrinkle that similar suits against the NHL and NFL cannot claim. Since the W

WWE announces general managers for Raw, SmackDown

On the eve of the WWE Draft, new Raw commissioner Stephanie McMahon and SmackDown commissioner Shane McMahon revealed their choices for each show's general manager - and while the choice for SmackDown was leaked last week, the new Raw general manager was a huge surprise. After announcing that Raw will be the home of a new exclusive cruiserweight division, Stephanie McMahon introduced WWE legend Mick Foley as the new Raw general manager.  Shane McMahon countered with one of the biggest fan favorites in WWE history, Daniel Bryan.  Bryan received a well-deserved ovation from the crowd, and serving as the GM of SmackDown is the perfect opportunity for Bryan to return to weekly programming after being forced to retire early due to injury earlier this year.
