Aussie Rules Football player accidentally kicks, breaks own leg

Injuries are a part of sports, though the nature of some of them are unfortunate and often the result of athletes simply trying to make plays lead their teams to victory. Such is the case of Western Bulldogs player Mitch Wallis, who suffered an untimely injury during a 75-60 loss against St. Kilda. While attempting to kick the ball away from the opposing team, Wallis ending up kicking his own leg in the process, which resulted in him breaking it as he was brought to the ground by a St. Kilda player. (Note: slightly graphic content below) It’s always unfortunate to see injuries like this occur, especially given how it occurred during a normal part of the game. These are the kind that can stick with people for a long time. The injury evokes painful memories of athletes like Joe Theismann, Kevin Ware, and, more recently Paul George, all of whom suffered debilitating injuries on seemingly routine plays that occur over the course of their respective sports. All of it goes to show the risk carried by playin

NCAA rules that hanging out with Drake is violation

Note to college basketball players: hanging out with Drake is an NCAA violation. Just ask Kentucky basketball, which self-reported the violation, stemming from an Instagram picture featuring the rapper posing next to Tyler Ulis last year. Per SECCountry.com: “A violation of ‘preferential treatment’ occurred when a UK player attended a Drake concert after-party and a member of the famous rapper’s management team recognized the player and invited him back to say hello. UK compliance discovered it after the athlete – whose name is redacted – posted a photo on social media. Tyler Ulis, UK’s started point guard at the time, posted a photo with Drake on Instagram the night of the concert, May 29, 2015, in his hometown of Chicago.”

Iowa forward Dale Jones gets 6th year of eligibility

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) Iowa power forward Dale Jones has been granted an extra year of eligibility. Jones tore a ligament in his right knee for the second time in three years in December after playing just six games. He was averaging 5.5 rebounds and three rebounds for the Hawkeyes. Jones, a junior college transfer, is expected to give Iowa's thin frontcourt a major boost over the next two seasons. The 6-foot-7, 227-pound Jones will likely get plenty of playing time after the Hawkeyes lost center Adam Woodbury and forward Jarrod Uthoff to graduation. Hawkeyes coach Fran McCaffery announced the NCAA's decision Thursday.

Coach K on controversial NC HB2 law: 'an embarrassing bill'

Last week, Albany canceled a scheduled non-conference game against Duke due to New York State’s imposed North Carolina travel ban, which was issued by Governor Andrew Cuomo as a reaction to the state’s House Bill 2.  HB2, which was signed earlier this year by North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory, states that transgender people must use the bathroom that corresponds with their birth gender. It also disallows gay, lesbian and transgender people from suing on the basis of gender identity and sexual orientation in state courts.  Today, Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski was one of several North Carolina coaches to criticize HB2 in a story by USA TODAY Sports. NC State head coach Mark Gottfried was also quoted.  “It’s an embarrassing bill,” Krzyzewski told USA TODAY Sports. “That’s all I’m going to say about it.” [....] North Carolina State coach Mark Gottfried said he was “appalled” by the bill and is embarrassed when he goes on recruiting visits and parents ask about it. “I’m again

NCAA investigating USF men’s basketball for academic fraud

The South Florida basketball program is under investigation for academic fraud, according to Jeff Goodman of ESPN. Assistant coach Oliver Antigua, the brother of head coach Orlando Antigua, has been told he cannot go out on the road for recruiting this month, probably in response to the investigation. ORlando Antigua took over at South Florida before the 2014 season after spending six seasons as an assistant for John Calipari, one at Memphis and five at Kentucky. He’s also currently the head coach of the Dominican Republic’s basketball team. Oliver Antigua, the Antigua brother under investigation, was an assistant for one season at Seton Hall before coming to USF, and spent more than a decade coaching high school basketball in the Bronx. Antigua has not been able to change the fortunes of the Bulls, as he’s 16-47 in his two campaigns behind the bench. The Bulls were 7-24 last season, and have finished above .500 only twice in the last 13 seasons, both under Stan Heath. Their last NCAA Tournament appe

Photo: Duke Basketball Well-Represented At USA Basketball Training Camp

This week is USA Basketball Training Camp in Las Vegas, and the Duke basketball program is very well-represented.  In addition to head coach Mike Krzyzewski, who coaches Team USA, and point guard Kyrie Irving, who is on the roster, several former Blue Devils are part of the USA Select Team training with the future Olympians. They are Jahlil Okafor, Jabari Parker, Rodney Hood, Justise Winslow and Brandon Ingram.  That whole crew, along with Duke assistant coaches Jon Scheyer, Jeff Capel and Nolan Smith and legendary former Blue Devil Grant Hill posed for a photo after workouts.  .@Duke_MBB taking over Las Vegas for @usabasketbal pic.twitter.com/EW8kr8D4SB — Blue Devil Network (@BlueDevil_NTWRK) July 19, 2016 This is a good image for the Blue Devils to sell to recruits. Purdue gives Painter three-year extension

The Purdue Boilermakers appear to have found their man for the long haul, at least for the time being, as reports surfaced that the program decided to extend head coach Matt Painter’s contract. The deal is reported to be a three-year extension through the 2021-22 season. This is the second extension doled out to Painter, with the first being signed back in 2011 when he was on Missouri’s coaching radar. Painter himself stated through text messages that the extension might not become official until later in the summer. The deal was later confirmed by senior associate athletic communications director Tom Schott, who also stated that a finalized deal would not be recognized until the Purdue Board of Trustees meeting, which is set to take place on August 25-26. For the upcoming 2016-17 season, Painter will be making a base salary of $2.45 million. Prior to his extension, he led the Boilermakers to a respectable 26-9 season. The team managed to qualify for the NCAA Tournament as a No. 5 seed, but fell to 1

Thad Matta says Ohio State basketball transfers 'got rid of problems'

Ohio State is known as a football school, but men’s basketball coach Thad Matta has built a perennial contender in Columbus. Last season, however, the Buckeyes took a step back with 21-14 record and a second-round NIT exit. Things went from bad to worse as an exodus of highly touted freshmen then transferred. In total, four players (all freshmen) left Columbus. Center Daniel Giddens is gone to Alabama. Forward Mickey Mitchell packed his bags for UCSB. Point guard A.J. Harris moved west to New Mexico State. That trio followed guard Austin Grandstaff, who transferred from OSU to Oklahoma during the season, and has now transferred again to DePaul without playing a minute for the Sooners. The mass exodus left Thad Matta with just 1/5th of his fifth-ranked 2015 recruiting class in guard Ja’Quan Lyle. Given how high profile Ohio State is as a program and the unusually high amount of transfers out by multiple four-star recruits, it’s honestly a surprise this hasn’t been a bigger story. The impact may be

Top recruit Jayson Tatum chose Duke because of Coach K

Jayson Tatum is the latest high school basketball star to choose to attend Duke in hopes of continuing the Blue Devils’ legacy as one of the top programs in the country. Tatum, who was the Gatorade National High School Athlete of the Year, was interviewed on the ESPYS red carpet Wednesday and was asked what led him to choose Duke. He singled out Coach K as the reason. “Really, Coach K. After I took my visit, it just felt right,” said Tatum. “Coach K is the best in my opinion and I’m happy to play for him.” Coach K caught some flak last season for lecturing an opponent, but it’s clear his messages and reputation still resonate quite well with players. He is highly respected and loved by his athletes. And with Tatum, a 6-foot-8 shooting guard from Saint Louis in the mix, Duke should continue to be a top program for the next year or two.
