Maryland's Melo Trimble returning to school
Melo Trimble is coming back to school for his junior season.  It was announced Wednesday night that the Maryland star point guard is taking his name out of the NBA Draft and returning for the 2016-17 season.  Trimble had declared for the 2016 NBA Draft but didn’t hire an agent, meaning he could return to school if he wanted to. And that’s what he’s done.  BREAKING: Melo Trimble is returning to Maryland, sources told @CBSSports. — Jon Rothstein (@JonRothstein) May 26, 2016 The 6-foot-2 point guard had a tremendous freshman season but suffered a bit of a sophomore slump, as his shooting percentages dropped and he appeared less explosive.   Trimble struggled at the NBA Combine and was believed to be a potential second round pick if he was to stay in the NBA Draft.  With Trimble’s return, Maryland is expected to be a top-25 team in 2016-17.
Isaiah Briscoe returning to Kentucky, Marcus Lee to transfer
LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Kentucky forward Marcus Lee will transfer after withdrawing from the NBA draft, while guard Isaiah Briscoe plans to return for his sophomore season with the Wildcats.Wildcats coach John Calipari said in a release Wednesday that the 6-foot-9 junior wants to transfer to a school out west to be closer to his family. Lee participated in the NBA draft combine but was given an outside chance at being selected. He'll have one season of eligibility remaining and says, "I'm trying to do what's right for me and my family."Lee averaged 6.4 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.6 blocks last season.Briscoe announced on his Twitter account that he is returning to Kentucky after averaging 9.6 points and 5.3 rebounds per game last season. The 6-3 freshman didn't participate in the combine but worked out for several teams to gauge his prospects.
Billy Donovan deserves more credit for Thunder rolling
The Oklahoma City Thunder are absolutely rolling over the Golden State Warriors in the Western Conference Finals. Russell Westbrook has found another gear, Kevin Durant is finally feeling like himself again after a rather miserable Game 1 and guys like Steven Adams and Andre Roberson are playing the best ball of their careers. One name we haven’t heard a lot of, though, is Billy Donovan, the head coach of this surging team. The Thunder have been here before, but they’ve never played like this before. Before Scott Brooks’ final season in which the team didn’t even make the playoffs, Oklahoma City had been to three conference finals and an NBA Finals, never quite cresting that final ridge. Now we’re seeing a team that is making the historically best team in the history of the NBA’s regular season look incompetent. It’s easy to see the Warriors are struggling, but it’s about time to recognize, just as strongly, that those struggles have a lot to do with Donovan’s influence and schemes....
Pitino expects Chinanu Onuaku to remain in NBA Draft
Wednesday is the final day for players who have not hired agents to pull out of the NBA Draft and return to college. A few big names are still deciding, including Louisville big man Chinanu Onuaku. Head coach Rick Pitino does not seem confident that he’ll have the center back for next season. Rick Pitino said he expects Chinanu Onuaku to stay in the NBA draft. Nothing official yet, though, from the Louisville big man. — Jeff Goodman (@GoodmanESPN) May 25, 2016 Onuaku had a very nice sophomore year for Louisville, averaging 9.9 points, 8.5 boards, and two blocks per game. Draft Express has Onuaku being picked 38th overall by the Milwaukee Bucks.
Josh Hart announces he will return to Villanova for senior season
Junior guard Josh Hart was one of the top players on this year’s national championship Villanova team, but he’s not done with college yet. Hart, who averaged 15.5 points per game for the Wildcats, officially announced his return to ‘Nova for his senior season. ONE MORE YEAR!! \\\/// — Josh Hart (@JoshHart_3) May 25, 2016 Hart scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds in Villanova’s win over North Carolina last month. In the national semifinal blowout of Oklahoma, Hart exploded for 23 points. He scored double-digit points in all but three games last season for Jay Wright’s team.
Mamadou Ndiaye will remain in NBA Draft, forgo senior season
Mamadou Ndiaye, a 7-foot-6 junior at UC Irvine, has officially decided to forgo his final season of college eligibility and enter the NBA Draft. Ndiaye, who is one of only two 7-foot-6 college players in the country, declared for the draft last month but has not hired an agent. He told ESPN’s Jeff Goodman he will not return to UC Irvine next year. Goodman previously reported that Ndiaye had workouts scheduled with the Los Angeles Lakers and Houston Rockets. Ndiaye is considered a very raw NBA prospect. The 22-year-old averaged 12.1 points and 7.2 rebounds per game last season. This year’s draft class is considered very weak, so it makes sense that he would make the leap now. Some of you may remember Ndiaye from the hilarious photo we shared with you a few years back of a tiny player posting him up. He won’t find himself in many situations like that if and when he appears in an NBA game.
Duke-Mich St, UNC-Indiana highlight ACC/Big Ten Challenge
A pair of rematches, one from the 2015 Final Four (Duke-Michigan State) and the other from the 2016 Sweet 16 (Indiana-North Carolina) are the headlining matchups of the 2016 ACC/Big Ten Challenge.  CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein tweeted out all 14 pairings this evening. Michigan St at Duke headlines the 2016 ACC/Big 10 Challenge. Complete matchups via @JonRothstein ... pic.twitter.com/h9LTnCEvEt — Chip Miller (@BLUEChip_Miller) May 23, 2016 This will be the third meeting in as many seasons for the Spartans and Blue Devils. In November 2014, they clashed in the Champions Classic in Indianapolis before squaring off again at the Final Four in the same city in April 2015. Duke owns the overall lead in the series, 10-2, with MSU last registering a victory in the Sweet 16 of the 2005 NCAA Tournament. Indiana leads the all-time series against North Carolina, 8-6, but the Tar Heels thrashed the Hoosiers 101-86 in the Sweet 16 in Philadelphia in March. The last time these two teams met in ...
Former Kansas player escapes car seconds before it explodes
Former Kansas guard Brannen Greene escaped a burning car seconds before it exploded on Friday. Greene, who left the Jayhawks’ program following the 2015-16 season, was in New York, where he’s been training for the NBA Draft. The 6-foot-7, 215-pound guard was in the back seat of a car in the Bronx when it was struck by another car from behind. Greene’s car went airborne, came down on a guard rail and caught fire. The former Jayhawk escaped through a shattered window seconds before the car exploded. He sustained only minor injuries. The driver of Greene’s car was not seriously hurt, either. Brannen Greene was told he shouldn't have survived this wreck. But he did. https://t.co/NJli7OO9gc pic.twitter.com/6eY1te7fsX — Joe Davis (@ByJoeDavis) May 22, 2016 From the report: “Everything in the car — his phone, his computer, his luggage was burned and destroyed. The police said Brannen should not have survived. He walked away from it with a terrible headache, all-over body aches b...
Photo: Louisville’s Donovan Mitchell Says The Cardinals Are Better Than Duke
No college basketball team is currently receiving more love than Duke.  The Blue Devils, a likely unanimous preseason No. 1 for the 2016-17 season, added to their ridiculous amount of depth on Thursday, receiving a commitment from 2016 five-star center Marques Bolden. Duke now has the No. 1 recruiting class in the country to go with Grayson Allen, Amile Jefferson and others.  Coach K’s team is, simply, loaded.  Louisville’s Donovan Mitchell isn’t fearing them, though.  The Cardinals’ rising sophomore point guard posted the following on Instagram late Thursday night. It’s pretty clear what his message is: Louisville > Duke.  gt;>>>> A photo posted by Donovan Mitchell (@spidadmitchell) on May 19, 2016 at 7:42pm PDT Louisville did beat Duke once last season, 71-64, at the KFC Yum! Center. The Cardinals should be pretty, pretty good in 2016-17, too. Many outlets have Rick Pitino’s team ranked in the top 10 in their way-too-early preseason top 25s.  But better than...
Duke trolls John Calipari after landing commitment from Marques Bolden
The official Twitter account for the Duke men's basketball program trolled John Calipari after the program landed a commitment from highly sought-after recruit, Marques Bolden. Bolden, a five-star center from Texas, on Thursday announced that he was choosing to attend Duke. He picked Duke most notably over Kentucky, which led the Blue Devils’ Twitter account to troll Wildcats head coach John Calipari. Here’s the tweet sent out by Duke, which included multiple flame/fire emojis, along with a fishing rod and some fish/whales. Duke quickly deleted that tweet. Why would they delete it and what makes it a troll job? Well, all you need to do is go back 10 days on Calipari’s timeline, and you’ll see he talked at length about the vision for his program. Part of his pitch follows the maxim of give a person a fish, you feed him for a day, teach them how to fish, you feed them for a lifetime. That means giving them the fishing rod and the lures to help them catch fish, not to just give them the fish.
