Results, photos, video highlights: Keith Thurman wins decision against Shawn Porter

Prizefighting returned to CBS on Saturday with a Fight of the Year candidate as undefeated welterweight world champion Keith Thurman edged former world champion Shawn Porter in a close but unanimous decision scored 115-113 by all three ringside judges. The 12,718 fans in attendance at Barclays Center in Brooklyn and the viewers across the U.S. watching the first primetime boxing event on CBS since Muhammed Ali-Leon Spinks in 1978 were treated to a slugfest between two of the brightest stars in boxing’s glamour division. Thurman (27-0, 22 KOs) and Porter (26-2-1, 16 KOs) combined to throw over 1200 punches in the SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING on CBS event, presented by Premier Boxing Champions. The marquee showdown was a story of accuracy vs. activity, as Thurman landed 50 percent of his power shots, compared to 38 percent for Porter, and 44 percent of his total punches compared to just 36 percent for the challenger. While Thurman landed at a higher percentage, Porter was the...

Keith Thurman survives war with Shawn Porter to keep WBA welterweight belt

NEW YORK —€” Keith Thurman defended his WBA welterweight title Saturday night with a 12-round unanimous decision over Shawn Porter in a fierce bout.In a fight chock full of action from the outset, both fighters landed precise combinations and also missed wildly. Each was coming off lengthy layoffs, and their eagerness to show their skills made for an entertaining bout that was the first in prime time on CBS since 1978.That gap shouldn't be nearly as long after this one, in which Thurman won on all three cards 115-113. The AP also scored the fight 115-113 for Thurman. Many in the crowd of 12,718 at Barclay's Center booed the decision, and the fight was close throughout. But Thurman (27-0, 22 KOs) landed the more powerful punches. Both exhausted men had welts by their eyes at the end, and they each held up their arms in triumph at the final bell. But Porter (26-2-1) came up just short.

Keith Thurman retains welterweight title in action fight

Keith Thurman got by Shawn Porter Saturday on CBS, but it was anything but easy. The scores illustrated just how close it was: 115-113 on all three cards, and it could’ve been that way either way for either man. And we got plenty of punches swapped in a bout that came close to living up to its hype. Thurman and Porter are two of the best young fighters in the sport, and two of its best welterweights. As good as it was, it could’ve been even better: It took until the 9th and 10th rounds for a full-on brawl to break out, as both fought tactically, even defensively, until then. Thurman made his name as a puncher. He has since tried to make himself an all-around boxer-puncher. Porter was once a pure mauler/pressure fighter. He has since tried to make himself into more of an intelligent pressure boxer. Had Thurman fought in his former style and Porter too, it might’ve been an easy KO for Thurman. Even if Thurman had focused on the KO, this scribe thinks he could’ve gotten it. Still, by the 4

Manny Pacquiao-Adrien Broner fight set for October?

There has been a lot of chatter this week about a Manny Pacquiao-Adrien Broner fight set for October, but the fight either is or isn’t happening depending on whom you ask. Word of a Pacquiao-Broner clash first emerged on Thursday, when Golden Boy Promotions VP Eric Gomez was talking with Boxing Scene about fights he wanted to set up for Canelo Alvarez. Gomez said Golden Boy was interested in making a match between Canelo and Pacquiao, but the Filipino was already taken. Here are the original comments: “We’re close to finalizing an opponent. We have a short list. We’re very close. We’ll be announcing it shortly but one of the guys we were interested in was (Manny) Pacquiao. We’d love to do a Pacquiao fight but from what we hear he has a deal to fight Adrien Broner,” Gomez told BoxingScene.com about possible opponents for Canelo. With Pacquiao supposedly unavailable, Golden Boy announced they had settled on Liam Smith as Canelo’s opponent. Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum says that’s a bunc

Tyson Fury postpones rematch bout with Wladimir Klitschko

Tyson Fury is the current heavyweight champion of the world, and was scheduled to fight Wladimir Klitschko in his hometown of Manchester on July 9. That fight has now been postponed because of a badly sprained ankle that Fury recently had diagnosed. Fury posted the announcement to his Instagram account. Some of Fury’s remarks from that video: “Hey guys, I got a little bit of bad news for you all: About 10 days ago, I was running and I went over my ankle, sprained my ankle. I’ve been to the hospital and had X-rays and MRI scans and all that stuff. They say it’s not broken but it’s badly sprained. Keep off it for 6-7 weeks. I tried to still train a bit. I had a second opinion a week later and I got the same advice. So the fight will be postponed. “Sorry to all my fans to let you all down, but injuries do happen. It’s one of them things. My apologies to everybody. The fight will be on as soon as possible. That’s all I know at this moment. But the fight is still going ahead as soo

Five pro boxers who might want to compete in the Olympics

The announcement that professional boxers will be able to compete at the 2016 Rio Olympics is certainly controversial but is undeniably one of the most interesting developments in the amateur game in a long time. It remains to be seen whether any pros feel the need to try for a medal and can stand the pay cut and taking the hard-earned Olympic spot of a young amateur. 2016 Olympic boxing, starting on Saturday, Aug. 6, is just about two months away. Here are a few pro fighters who may be up the Olympic challenge more than most. Acelino "Popó" Freitas Although not heard of much since his bouts with Joel Casamayor and Diego Corrales in the early 2000s, Freitas (pictured above, via) retained a title at junior lightweight for four years, before claiming the WBO lightweight title. Born into poverty, Freitas is now a politician and a national hero in Brazil. It seemed that he ended his career on a high in 2012 when he came out of retirement and knocked out undefeated prospect Michael Oliveira, a man 14 year

A song for Muhammad Ali

The beauty and the beast of modern times is that we can all mourn together. Well, at least that’s one of the byproducts of our interconnected world these days. No longer waiting for the announcement of one’s passing to settle (or in a most creepy sense, not waiting for the actual passing), the instant remembrances after the death of a public figure become more than expressions of sadness from many admirers. Collectively, they unfortunately become an event in and of itself. At some point, you’d have to think that everything that needs to be said has been said about Muhammad Ali. It almost feels trite for anyone who works in this business to spin yarn about the boxing accomplishments or even the symbol he became with the platform he was given. And yet, it’s done because while we demand everything under the sun from a sports figure while (s)he is living, we turn those lofty expectations inward when it’s time to mourn his or her loss. From every observer, every word has to be right, every word has to s

Floyd Mayweather Sr. hospitalized with dehydration

Floyd Mayweather Sr., the father of undefeated boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr., was taken to the hospital early Thursday morning with what is being reported as dehydration. According to TMZ, emergency workers responded to a call at a Las Vegas coffee shop at around 7:30 a.m. They were later seen loading Mayweather Sr. into the back of an ambulance, but the 63-year-old is apparently going to be fine. He was diagnosed with dehydration and was not expected to be held overnight. Mayweather Sr. boxed in the welterweight division in the 1970s and 1980s. He has trained Mayweather Jr. and been credited with teaching his son the defensive skills that have led to a perfect 49-0 record. Mayweather Jr. also may have inherited his love for talking trash from his dad.

People are selling ‘free’ tickets to Muhammad Ali’s funeral

Fans lined up around the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville on Wednesday to pick up free tickets to Muhammad Ali’s upcoming funeral. While some wanted tickets to honor the late boxer, others were apparently just trying to make a buck. The Associated Press reported Wednesday that some people are willing to pay as much as $25 for tickets to Ali’s funeral. Tickets to the funeral were given out on a first come, first serve basis outside the Yum! Center on Wednesday. Thousands left and were unable to get tickets. Ali family spokesperson Bob Gunnell was not happy when he heard that people were attempting to sell the funeral tickets, saying that Ali wanted the funeral to be a free event. “I’m personally disgusted and amazed that someone would try to profit off of Muhammad Ali’s memorial service,” he said. Those who are attempting to sell the tickets have gone mostly quiet when asked about their decision to sell the tickets. One seller hung up on a reporter when they asked how much the ticket was g

Will Smith, Lennox Lewis pallbearers for Muhammad Ali

If you ever took for granted the relationship Will Smith had with Muhammad Ali after Smith portrayed the boxing icon on film, you no longer will. Smith was announced as one of the pallbearers for Ali’s funeral scheduled for this Friday. As word of Ali’s passing spread over the weekend, Smith was one of many stars to pay their respects. “You shook up the World! My Mentor & My Friend,” Smith posted on his Facebook page. “You changed my Life. Rest in Peace.” Ali has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 67%, and Smith’s portrayal of Ali has widely been praised over the years since hitting theaters in 2001. Smith was nominated for an Oscar for his performance, and Ali said in an interview with Oprah Winfrey that Smith scared him with his performance. “But when we think about the legacy of Muhammad Ali, what he did in the ring is not what we think about,” said Smith. “For nearly two years, I worked to transform myself into the man who changed his name from Cassius Clay to Muhammad Ali and shook
