Peter, the former WBC World Champion, was first into the ring accompanied by his coach Rodney Crisler, and following a short workout, he revealed his plan for Saturday. ‘’It’s great to be here,’’ said ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’. ‘’I’m in good shape and I’m ready to fight. The plan is simple for me. I’ve come here to knock Pulev out and to take the belt and my money back home to Las Vegas.’’ Pulev received a hero’s welcome as he entered the ring, and after being put through his paces by legendary German coach Ulli Wegner, ‘The Cobra’ promised to deliver a memorable victory for his fervent Bulgarian fans. ‘’This time everything is different for me,’’ he said. ‘’Because this is my homeland, my hometown, the city I was born, and the city I grew up in. David Haye vs. Tony Bellew presser heats up with punches thrown

David Haye and Tony Bellew had to be separated at the launch press conference for their Heavyweight blockbuster on March 4 at The O2 in London, live on Sky Sports Box Office – with tickets selling out in record-breaking time. Haye and Bellew goaded each other during a tense back and forth at the top table and as they lined up to pose for head-to-head photos, tensions boiled over and the pair had to be restrained by security personnel. Before the fracas, both fighters stated their cases for victory strongly, with Haye saying he’s too powerful for the Liverpool star and Bellew telling him if it comes down to heart he’ll prevail. “This is the fight that the public want to see – they want me to shut Tony Bellew up,” said Haye. “I will end the whenever I want, it’s completely up to me. I will dominate Tony Bellew on March 4. “He thinks he can KO me? Look at all the Heavyweights I’ve boxed that have hit me with 10oz gloves and not put me down – but the past is all irrelevant as I’m

Amateur boxer dies from brain injury days after first fight

An amateur boxer died on Wednesday, days after participating in his first career bout. Kuba Moczyk, a 22-year-old, had his first career fight Saturday at Atlantis Arena in Great Yarmouth, England. Moczyk lost after suffering a knockout punch in the third round and was taken to the hospital with bleeding in his brain. He was in a coma and on life support until passing away Wednesday night. His twin sister, Magdalena, created a GoFundMe page to raise money to help move her brother to a “specialist hospital abroad” that had generated over £4,000 for the cause. “Kuba was looking forward to the big day, he really wanted to be in that ring. He was training long and hard for it," Magdalena wrote on the page about her brother. “He wasn’t going there to hurt anyone.. he wanted to show what he’s capable of and make his team proud."

Return to relevance: Three heavyweight fights we need

Conversations with my mother tend to be either educational or hilarious or both. Mom will ask me what I have going on in my life, I’ll tell her the things I do on a regular basis and she will routinely be amazed at the things her son is doing. I say this not to brag, but if your mom is like mine, she’s generally over the moon about the life her kid has. So when I told her that I was going to Las Vegas for the Sergey Kovalev-Andre Ward megafight, she was perplexed on a number of levels. Mom: Kovalev vs. Ward huh? Never heard of them. How big are they? Ed: Ma, they’re two of the five best fighters in the world. They’re fighting at 175 pounds. Mom: I remember when you weighed 175 pounds, that was like 20 years ago! (chuckles) Ed: …….. Mom: Ain’t that how big Floyd Mayweather and what’s his name…Pa-que-oh, are? Ed: It’s Pacquiao, and no. They fought at 145 pounds! Mom: What? Child…I haven’t weighed that much in over 40 years! Real men shouldn’t be fighting at that weight, they

Sergey Kovalev vs. Andre Ward gave boxing what it needed

I don’t care who you think won the fight. If you, the reader, comment on this post expressing agreement or displeasure with the fight, you will have swung and missed the point of this post by a wide margin. Saturday night, Sergey Kovalev and Andre Ward provided much needed excitement to boxing, and those two were a breath of fresh air to temporarily resuscitate what’s perceived as a dying sport. I stated in my last article about boxing that it is still alive and well, at least to hardcore followers. The problem is it has been unable to bring casual eyes to it, upping those good fights into mega ones. One reason I did not mention that adds to this conundrum is that the truly elite fighters seem hesitant to step into the ring with an opponent who is a serious threat to that zero in the loss column. I won’t go too far and say most of the great fighters duck each other intentionally, but the are matchups that seem to be worked around. Back to Saturday, we witnessed a great fight in every sense of the term

Andre Ward narrowly defeats Sergey Kovalev in a corker

We’re going to debate the scorecards in Andre Ward vs Sergey Kovalev for a long time, a bout Saturday night in which Ward barely won according to all three judges but not according to most fans watching. What we won’t debate is that we got a hugely compelling battle, one with momentum shifts, a knockdown and tactical excellence — high-level boxing at nearly its best. Because it wasn’t 100 percent clear who deserved to win the HBO Pay-Per-View light heavyweight contest, we probably don’t emerge with a clear new pound-for-pound champ, as some thought we might. You know what would settle that? Doing it again, a decision every fan can probably live with. Things looked awful for Ward early. He was hurt by a jab in the 1st round. He got dropped hard by a counter right hand in the 2nd. And through nearly the halfway point, despite Ward making some adjustments in the 3rd that perhaps saw him win that round and the 5th, Kovalev was outboxing Kovalev in toto. Ward couldn’t seem to pull the trigger, was ge

Andre Ward, Sergey Kovalev ‘of course’ want rematch

Andre Ward was awarded a unanimous decision victory over Sergey Kovalev in a controversial decision from the judges scoring the fight between the two at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday night. Though Kovalev scored a knockdown early and looked to be dominating the fight especially in the early rounds, all three judges scored the fight 114-113. That means they gave seven rounds to Ward and only five to Kovalev, despite the Russian’s one 10-8 round and early dominance. The controversial decision led to people instantly wondering whether there would be a rematch. Both fighters said they wanted one. “Of course,” Ward said when asked by HBO’s Max Kellerman about whether he would fight Kovalev again. “I’m not going to negotiate a fight right now … we’ll see what’s next.” Kovalev also answered “of course” when asked about a rematch, though he made noise about possibly not wanting to fight in Las Vegas again where he might have felt the crowd and judges were biased towards Ward.

Mayweather has good reason for not wanting to fight again

Boxing legend Floyd Mayweather has so many victories and so much money that he’s really not in a position to desire more of either. But that hasn’t prevented speculation of him returning to the ring for a chance to end his career with an unblemished 50-0 record. Fuel was added to that fire when Mayweather was spotted ringside during Manny Pacquiao’s recent bout with Jessie Vargas, a fight Pacquiao won convincingly. But Mayweather defused those rumors Wednesday in Brooklyn by saying he, unlike some boxers, has no reason to come out of retirement. “A lot of fighters in the sport of boxing may want to retire, but they have to fight because they have to,” Mayweather said to USA TODAY Sports. ”I don’t have to fight.” Mayweather credited his 2015 victory over Pacquiao for funding a lifestyle he has no intention of interrupting. “I just made $300 million for fighting Pacquiao. I’m OK. Like I said before, I’m happy with my position,” Mayweather said. “Once again, the money don’t make
