Checking in on Katie Taylor’s move from amateur to professional

New in the Ring : Katie Taylor moves from Amateur to Professional Katie Taylor, the golden girl of women’s amateur boxing, made her debut on the professional boxing circuit at the Wembley Arena, London on November 26, 2016. She took her first professional victory emphatically defeating Karina Kopsinka over three rounds. Of course, she’s already gotten back into the ring as well. She returned to action on December 10th, and won her second professional fight via decision against a 9-1 veteran. Katie, with a string of titles under her belt, had delayed her arrival into the professional boxing world until after her controversial defeat at the Rio Olympics. Having won gold at London 2012 and recognition as the first ever female lightweight champion, the Rio disappointment made her determined to take her career to the next level – an amateur career that has already seen her win 5 gold medals in the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships, as well as 6 golds at the European Champion...

Mayweather trolls McGregor with $10K caption contest

The Internet loves a good caption contest, and Floyd Mayweather is obliging while not only upping the stakes but also using it as his latest opportunity to troll Conor McGregor. The trash has intensified in recent days and weeks between the boxing and UFC stars, with Mayweather really going on the attack earlier this week. “I’ma tell you, he’s blowing smoke up everybody’s ass,” Mayweather said of McGregor’s decision to obtain a boxing license in the state of California a few weeks back, fueling speculation he might be gearing up for a boxing match with the undefeated and supposedly retired champ. “He don’t really wanna fight because I went to his boss,” Mayweather claimed. "He’s just doing that to keep his name alive, you know what I’m saying, to stay relevant. He don’t really want to fight. He’s doing that building his followers, but he’s smart.” Speaking of building followers, let’s fast forward to late Wednesday night. Mayweather decided to double down on the trash talk

HBO Boxing’s Bernard Hopkins farewell fight event preview

HBO Boxing closes out 2016 with an iconic competitor taking on a determined challenger when Bernard Hopkins competes in his farewell fight against Joe Smith, on a card also featuring Joseph Diaz, and a fight between Oleksandr Usyk and Thabiso Mchunu, all airing this Saturday at 10 pm from The Forum in Inglewood, Cal., exclusively on HBO. For his final bout, Philadelphia’s Bernard Hopkins (55-7-2, 32 KOs) takes on rising prospect Joseph Smith, Jr. (21-1, 18 KOs) from Long Island in a scheduled 12-round light heavyweight contest. In a remarkable career that started behind prison walls and defied the odds, Hopkins, 51, has fought professionally as a middleweight and light heavyweight for 28 years. Winning seven titles and making a record 20 consecutive successful middleweight title defenses, he is widely considered a sure thing for the Hall of Fame. But age and a lack of ring activity are certain to be factors in Hopkins’ 23rd appearance on HBO, since he hasn’t fought since Nov. ...

Refreshed Klitschko looks to restore reputation vs Joshua

LONDON (AP) When Wladimir Klitschko fights Anthony Joshua for two world heavyweight titles in April, it will end an 18-month wait to restore his boxing reputation. Klitschko's career has been on hold since losing his IBF, WBA and WBO belts in a surprising defeat to Tyson Fury in November 2015. Two attempts at a rematch failed because of Fury's personal problems, leaving the 40-year-old Klitschko in limbo after nearly a decade ruling the heavyweight division. ''I was not sitting back, doing nothing and drinking beer in the past year. I was training, preparing for the fight that never happened,'' Klitschko said Wednesday during a media event at Wembley Stadium, which will host the bout. ''I think this gave me, in a certain way after 26 years being active in the sport, a break I probably needed.'' Refreshed and with his motivation ''as high as the sky,'' Klitschko has been given a tough assignment on his return to the ring. In the Ukrainian's absence and with Fury taking time away from boxing to deal with

Boxer throws table at rival during press conference

If we Americans thought the trash-talking that happens prior to boxing matches here in the states were pretty insane, we legitimately have nothing on the Brits. In a press conference prior to their upcoming fight, British boxers Dereck Chisora and Dillian Whyte got into a verbal jab match that rivals anything we’ve seen from professionals here in the United States. The talking went on for a good couple minutes before Chisora up and threw one of the tables Whyte’s way. It was tremendous. WHYTE AND CHISORA JUST KICKED OFF!!! #WhyteChisora #Boxing pic.twitter.com/vWZJnhHgJI — Sheldan Keay (@SheldanKeay) December 7, 2016 “Me and Dereck both know (what would happen) if we were left in a room with no security,” Whyte said earlier, via Sky Sports . “When I stepped to him and threw punches, he was scared.” The promoter for the event later indicated on social media that weigh-ins would take place separately on Friday. If these two guys can’t get through a basic press conference...

Amateur boxer dies from brain injury days after first fight

An amateur boxer died on Wednesday, days after participating in his first career bout. Kuba Moczyk, a 22-year-old, had his first career fight Saturday at Atlantis Arena in Great Yarmouth, England. Moczyk lost after suffering a knockout punch in the third round and was taken to the hospital with bleeding in his brain. He was in a coma and on life support until passing away Wednesday night. His twin sister, Magdalena, created a GoFundMe page to raise money to help move her brother to a “specialist hospital abroad” that had generated over £4,000 for the cause. “Kuba was looking forward to the big day, he really wanted to be in that ring. He was training long and hard for it," Magdalena wrote on the page about her brother. “He wasn’t going there to hurt anyone.. he wanted to show what he’s capable of and make his team proud."

Return to relevance: Three heavyweight fights we need

Conversations with my mother tend to be either educational or hilarious or both. Mom will ask me what I have going on in my life, I’ll tell her the things I do on a regular basis and she will routinely be amazed at the things her son is doing. I say this not to brag, but if your mom is like mine, she’s generally over the moon about the life her kid has. So when I told her that I was going to Las Vegas for the Sergey Kovalev-Andre Ward megafight, she was perplexed on a number of levels. Mom: Kovalev vs. Ward huh? Never heard of them. How big are they? Ed: Ma, they’re two of the five best fighters in the world. They’re fighting at 175 pounds. Mom: I remember when you weighed 175 pounds, that was like 20 years ago! (chuckles) Ed: …….. Mom: Ain’t that how big Floyd Mayweather and what’s his name…Pa-que-oh, are? Ed: It’s Pacquiao, and no. They fought at 145 pounds! Mom: What? Child…I haven’t weighed that much in over 40 years! Real men shouldn’t be fighting at that weight, they
