311, the alternative rock band known for their fusion of rock, reggae, hip-hop, and funk, was formed in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1988. The band’s original lineup included Nick Hexum (vocals, guitar), Jim Watson (guitar), Aaron "P-Nut" Wills (bass), Chad Sexton (drums), and Doug "SA" Martinez (vocals, turntables). Jim Watson was later replaced by Tim Mahoney on guitar.
The band’s name, 311, is derived from the police code for indecent exposure in Omaha, which was chosen after one of their friends was arrested for skinny dipping. In their early years, 311 independently released three albums: Dammit! (1990), Unity (1991), and Hydroponic (1992). These early releases helped the band build a dedicated local following.
In 1992, 311 relocated to Los Angeles and signed with Capricorn Records. Their major-label debut, Music, was released in 1993, featuring the singles "Do You Right" and "My Stoney Baby." The band's second album, Grassroots (1994), continued to build their reputation with tracks like "Homebrew."
311's self-titled album, also known as "The Blue Album," released in 1995, catapulted them to mainstream success. The album featured hit singles such as "Down" and "All Mixed Up," both of which received heavy airplay on alternative rock radio stations and MTV.
