The Roots was formed in 1987 by two high school friends, rapper Black Thought and drummer ?uestlove. The two brought their music to the streets and local talent shows before local clubs began to take notice and book them at their clubs. Their ticket sales for their club shows increased steadily and the band was starting to make a name for themselves in the underground scene. Bassist Hub and rapper Malik B. were added to the band soon after.
The Roots self-recorded their first album, Organix, prior to going on tour in Germany in 1993. The album grabbed the attention of several major labels and soon after they were signed and ready to record their second album.
Do You Want More?!!!??! was released in 1995. Although not a mainstream hit the album was very popular on the underground scene and their ticket sales continued to rise. DYWM used no samples or previously recorded sounds, it was a true hip-hop album from the band themselves. Rahzel and Kamal joined the band during this time.
The band has released 10 studio albums and collaborated on recordings and in live shows with a wide variety of artists in many musical genres. The Roots have served as the house band on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” since 2014. The Roots do not tour much during the year so when they do announce dates, the dates tend to sell out fast!
