About Charlie Wilson
Charlie Wilson, also known as Uncle Charlie, was born in Tulsa, OK in 1953. Wilson is an American R&B singer, songwriter, producer and the former lead vocalist for The Gap Band. He attended Langston University and would go on to become drum major in the Langston University Marching Pride. In 1972 Charlie Wilson joined The Gap Band (formed by his older brother) and a year later their younger brother joined. Even though the band had previously featured other members, by 1973 the band consisted of only the three Wilson brothers. The band had little success early on until their self-entitled album (The Gap Band) including the singles, “I’m in Love” and “Shake”, finally hit the charts. In 1980, the group released the album The Gap Band III which included the singles, “Yearning for Your Love” and “Burn Rubber (Why You Wanna Hurt Me)”, that put the band on the national scene. Charlie Wilson eventually left the band to become a solo artist. He released his debut album, You Turn MY Life Around, in 1992. As a solo artist, he has been nominated for eleven Grammy awards and six NAACP Image Awards, received a 2009 Soul Train Icon Award, and was a recipient of a BMI Icon Award in 2005.
