In 1984, Soundgarden was formed in Seattle, WA by singer Chris Cornell, lead guitarist Kim Thayil, and bassist Hiro Yamamoto.

Soundgarden was one of the founding fathers of the grunge rock scene coming out of Seattle. Nirvana with Kirk Cobain was also part of this movement in the 80’s’s. Soundgarden was the first grunge band to sign to a major label and when grunge music took off in the early 1990s the band gained massive popularity along with bands like Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and Alice in Chains.

Superunknown, was released in 1994 and put Soundgarden on the map worldwide. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard charts and yielded the Grammy Award-winning singles "Black Hole Sun" and "Spoonman".
