James Sheppard, Tuomo Ruutu Get PTOs with Vancouver
The Vancouver Canucks are bringing James Sheppard and Tuomo Ruutu into training camp on professional tryout contracts (PTO), the team confirmed Tuesday. After a season where he was moved to the New York Rangers and failed to produce, Sheppard spent last season in Switzerland’s National League A (NLA) playing for the Kloten Flyers. There he played 37 games, scoring 11 goals and 25 points. He went to Columbus Blue Jackets training camp on a PTO last season, but the trip didn’t produce a contract. Sheppard was the ninth overall pick in the 2006 NHL draft. Last year, Ruutu had a tough season in New Jersey. He was injured early in the season and never seemed to fully bounce back. The 33-year-old former 26-goal scorer played just 33 games, scoring no goals and a single assist while averaging only 11:30 of ice time per game, the second lowest total of his career. 2016-17 Fantasy Outlook: New York Rangers
The expectations never change on Broadway for the Rangers. Stanley Cup or bust. They came within a few games of that goal just two years ago, losing to the Kings in the 2014 Stanley Cup Final. They followed that up with an Eastern Conference Final appearance the year after. However, they then followed that with a lackluster effort in their first round loss this year to the eventual Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins. The biggest question facing the Rangers this year is can they get back to the level of an Eastern Conference contender or will they regress? There are a number of new faces that will be joining the Blue Shirts this season and there are a number of players who had a down season last year and now come in as big question marks going forward. But there is a reason for optimism. The team will have a number of impact players returning and they have a few young players set to step and help invigorate the team with some youthful energy. Top Performer: Henrik Lundqvist, G...
Poll: Are you comfortable with the defense as it stands?
The Rangers did a lot to improve this offseason. They completely retooled the bottom-six forwards and the penalty kill, and it appears they used some form of advanced statistical analysis in their decision making. While it appears the Rangers are set to have a better showing from their forwards, the defense remained largely untouched. As […] The post Poll: Are you comfortable with the defense as it stands? appeared first on Blue Seat Blogs.
3 Key Players for the New York Rangers in 2016
With the New York Rangers continuing to knock on the door of the Stanley Cup, the club is looking for those few missing pieces to come together to put them over the top. Already with one of the most loyal fan bases in the league, it is time to reward them with yet another push towards a long postseason run come next season. With that in mind, let us focus on personnel issues. In essence, there are three key players for the New York Ranger in 2016 that the club and fans alike will be looking at with keen interest. Mika Zibanejad The Rangers went four years in a row without a first round draft pick in deference to trying to win, and win now. They went at that with reckless abandon and certainly came close to succeeding. With last season’s abysmal first round performance against the Penguins, however, it was obvious that the team needed to focus somewhat on younger talent. That began this off-season when they traded center Derick Brassard away in order to acquire a 23 year old by the name of Mika Zibanejad.
Chris Drury hired as Rangers assistant general manager
NEW YORK (AP) The New York Rangers have hired former captain Chris Drury as their assistant general manager. General manager Jeff Gorton announced the promotion on Friday. In his expanded role, Drury will assist Gorton on all player transactions and contract negotiations, and he will continue to assist in overseeing and evaluating all players at the collegiate level. The 40-year-old rejoined the Rangers as director of player development a year ago. He will continue to assist in the development of team prospects, both on and off the ice, and serve as a liaison between the hockey operations department and prospects in the organization. During his 12-year NHL career, Drury played in 892 games with the Colorado Avalanche, Calgary Flames, Buffalo Sabres, and the Rangers, getting 255 goals and 360 assists. He was a member of the Avalanche's Stanley Cup championship team in 2000-01. Drury signed with the Rangers as a free agent in 2007 and played four seasons. He served as the captain for three seasons, the la
Thoughts on the Traverse City Roster
The New York Rangers recently announced their Traverse City roster and invites, and while the names don’t include players from my previous post there are some interesting names. There are three non-organizational forwards invited to the camp; Reid Duke, Nick Betz, and Zack Zborosky. On defense we have Colton Bobyk, Zachary Malatesta, Turner Ottenbreit, and Dylan […] The post Thoughts on the Traverse City Roster appeared first on Blue Seat Blogs.
New York Rangers sign Jimmy Vesey to entry-level contract
After days of anticipation and rumors, the 2016 Hobey Baker winner, Jimmy Vesey signed with the New York Rangers on Aug 19. There’s been a lot of hype surrounding Vesey (particularly because August is as slow as it gets for hockey news), but after letting the deal sink in for a little over a week, it’s time to analyze whether or not all the hype is warranted. Vesey was originally drafted by the Nashville Predators in the third round of the 2012 NHL draft, and after three years at Harvard, there was speculation regarding whether or not he would join the Predators or go back to school for another year. Empowered by a drive to complete his education, Vesey opted to stay for one more year, and continued his excellent play en route to being named the best NCAA men’s hockey player of 2016. His decision to return to Harvard prompted the Predators to trade Vesey to the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for a 2016 third round pick. However, Vesey still elected to enter free agency, and thus the media frenzy began. Seve

Rangers offseason highlighted by improving free agent process
If you’ve been around these parts long, then you know we really push process over results when it comes to roster moves made by the Rangers. If the right idea was there, but a player didn’t work out (Lee Stempniak), then so be it. The thought process was correct, but hey, not everything works out. Traverse City Tournament: Looking at the potential Rangers roster and invitees
